The Adriyala longwall underground mining project in India has started commercial production, 4 years after the British manufacturer, ATB Morley, supplied the colliery with an array of motors for a complete new longwall system. Caterpillar, the original equipment manufacturer, specified Morley as its supplier from the onset, basing their decision upon the proven performance of Morley motors in Australia. Morley worked closely with Caterpillar to obtain the necessary Directorate General of Mining Supply Approvals (DGMS), allowing them to install motors in coal mines throughout India. Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) – the Telengana-based coal mining company responsible for the Adriyala project – is the second largest Indian coal miner after Coal India and operates 13 opencast and 42 underground mines in Southern India, producing 52-million tons of coal per annum. On October 10th, SCCL reached a significant milestone whilst launching an onsite test-run, as freshly extracted coal cut from the underground coal face, emerged from the depths of the mine via the conveyor belt. Behind the scenes, the ATB Morley motors provided the driving force in this process, powering all of the machinery from the pumps through to the coal face shearer.
The Adriyala mine is forecast to produce around 1.5 million tonnes of coal per annum, almost 0.5 million tonnes more than the largest underground mines operated by Coal India and Monnet Ispat in the country produce. In time, the site’s production looks set to increase to 2.8 million tonnes per annum, generating around 500 MW of electricity at NTPC’s Ramagundam power station in Telegana. “The Adriyala project will adopt underground shaft mining technology to flush out coal and will be Asia’s largest longwall installation” announced S Narsing Rao, the Chairperson and Managing Director of SCCL.
