From a small idea seeded by a young mechanical engineer to a formidable name synonymous with mechanized railway maintenance,
Renmakch India has come a long way. With solutions that echo European and Japanese standards, the company has become a trusted partner to Indian Railways and Metro systems.
The World Bank-funded DC to AC propulsion conversion project in 2011 was a major breakthrough, and since then, Renmakch hasn’t looked back.
Engineering Review caught up with Neelesh Dixit, Managing Director of Renmakch India, who walked us through the company’s journey, its partnerships, innovations, and its passionate commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Excerpts:
1Q. Renmakch has an impressive legacy. Can you tell us how it all started?
Absolutely. Renmakch’s journey began in 1996 when I graduated from Father Agnel, Mumbai. Back then, railway depots relied heavily on manual methods for dismantling, inspection, and maintenance. I identified a business opportunity in automating and mechanizing these activities. Over time, I explored global markets—Germany, Netherlands, UK, Switzerland, Italy, Japan—to bring advanced technologies to India. That laid the foundation for Renmakch as a one-stop shop for depot equipment, integrated solutions, and railway maintenance infrastructure.
2Q. What were some early milestones that gave Renmakch a big push?
By 1999, we had started full-fledged repair and troubleshooting of undercarriages. But the big break came in 2011 with a World Bank-funded contract to convert the propulsion system of 20 trains from DC to AC. We completed it in just 18 months with help from our global partners. That project changed the game for us.
3Q. How would you describe Renmakch’s current core strengths?
We specialize in high-end technology solutions for rolling stock maintenance—everything from depot planning and equipment design to supply, installation, commissioning, and AMCs. Our product range includes mobile lifting jacks, pit jacks, roof platforms, shunters, bogie turntables, and multipurpose workstations. What sets us apart is our ability to deliver European-grade quality right here in India, often through tech partnerships and JVs.
4Q. Tell us about your manufacturing capabilities.
Our facility at Atgaon near Mumbai is state-of-the-art—equipped with the latest in fabrication, machining, and inspection technologies.
We have a highly skilled team and follow strict quality controls under ISO 9001-2015. Recently, we’ve added three new verticals: contract manufacturing of components, machine tool reconditioning, and export of fabricated parts and assemblies.
5Q. ‘Make in India’ seems to be more than a slogan at Renmakch. Please comment.
Indeed. We don’t just support the initiative; we live it. Many of our products are manufactured under European design standards here in India. We’re also enabling several global players to localize their technology in India. The Government’s push has been a great booster for MSMEs like us.
6Q. Could you talk about your international collaborations and how they’ve shaped the company?
We have strong relationships with companies like Yashima (Japan), Niteq (Netherlands), Ferraris (Italy), Nencki (Switzerland), Holmatro (Netherlands), and others. In fact, Yashima is now a shareholder. This makes us eligible for JICA-funded projects and opens up avenues across Southeast Asia. These partnerships ensure that our products meet the global gold standard.
7Q. What about training and knowledge transfer?
We’ve partnered with LOGOS of Russia to manufacture Driver Training Simulators. These are used in metros, urban transport, and even specialized vehicles like Belaz mining trucks. We also offer training in driving and maintenance from various centers across India.
8Q. What are some of the ‘firsts’ credited to Renmakch?
Quite a few! We introduced mobile lifting jacks, underfloor lifting systems, coach spring testing machines, battery-operated shunters, and sophisticated bogie turntables. Over the last couple of years, we’ve delivered over 160 mobile lifting jacks alone. Our long-standing association with Indian Railways and metro systems stands testimony to our capability and trustworthiness.
9Q. What’s next for Renmakch?
We are now entering the rolling stock component manufacturing space and exploring deeper collaborations for ‘Make in India’ production. We’re also ramping up exports of fabricated equipment and solutions. The goal is to be a globally recognized Indian brand in the field of rail depot mechanization.
