FARO Japan, Inc. (Head office: Aichi Prefecture) has announced the use of FARO Laser Scanner Focus3D in the movie “Platinum Data,” which was released on 16 March 2013 (Saturday). In the movie, the FARO Laser Scanner Focus3D was used at a crime scene, presented as state-of-the-art forensic equipment. This blockbuster movie was adapted for the big screen by director Keishi Otomo, based on a novel written by Keigo Higashino.

The movie is about Japan in the near future. Society is at the dawn of an era where there is 100% accuracy in criminal arrests, made possible by the latest DNA forensics that employs “Platinum Data” to identify the perpetrator. Ryuhei Kagura, who is an exceptional scientist working at the National Police Agency’s Special Analysis Research Institute, is assigned to the murder investigation of several people connected to the newly developed DNA forensics. Yet, when a faint trace of evidence left at the scene was analyzed through the DNA forensic system, it identified him as the offender. With absolutely no recollection of the incident, he decided to flee turning him from ‘the pursuer’ to ‘the pursued’. What is the truth hidden behind the DNA forensic system? The “Platinum Data” holds the key to all the answers.

Throughout the investigation, the FARO Focus3D is featured as the main device used to capture crime scenes in 3D. The FARO Focus3D is a 3D laser scanner that takes instant scans of buildings, geographical spaces, and large objects, and records the information as 3D data. In recent years, it has attracted much attention for its use at accident sites and in criminal investigations. It helps investigators preserve records of the situation at the scene as it originally was, and facilitates accurate evaluation and analysis even after time has elapsed.

Equipped with a touchscreen, the FARO Focus3D operates much like a digital camera and is extremely user-friendly.
