Secure bus communication even for hanging applications

At SPS IPC Drives, igus presented the world’s first high-tensile Profinet bus cable

Bus cables often reach their mechanical limits in hanging applications due to their small cross section and more fragile design. Therefore, igus has now developed the CFSPECIAL.182.060 bus cable for Profinet with special strain relief elements in the PUR outer jacket, which decouples the sensitive bus elements from the high tensile forces. All vertical applications, such as storage and retrieval equipment, can now be reliably and safely supplied with bus signals.

Bus signals such as Profinet are transmitted via special electrically coordinated bus cables, which must meet clearly defined electrical parameters in order to ensure correct data transmission. The cross sections of these cables are typically very small as communication does not require large levels of current. The advantage of this is that bus cables can therefore usually be very thin. However, these small and delicate structures have the disadvantage that the mechanical durability of the bus cables reaches its limits very quickly in hanging applications, depending on the cable length. This is because the maximum permissible tensile forces of the cable can be exceeded very quickly just under its own weight. Therefore, igus has now developed the new high-tensile CFSPECIAL.182.060 bus cable for Profinet. Due to its special structure with integrated strain relief elements, this can also allow hanging applications of 100 metres and more, and can carry the weight of the cable up to 50 kilograms. As a result, new modern storage and retrieval equipment can now rely on bus communication. For example, igus is now the only provider of the CAT5e cable to also offer a Profinet cable for increased tensile forces, rounding off bus communication for 80 percent of all bus applications.

Tested special cable with guarantee
The new CFSPECIAL.182.060 is shielded and features an abrasion-resistant PUR outer jacket with integrated strain relief fibres. The cable is resistant to oil and coolant, as well as to hydrolysis and microbes. The cable is also very impact-resistant and free of PVC and halogen. Like all igus cables, the CFSPECIAL.182.060 has also been tested in its own test laboratory spread over a floor area of 2,750 sq. metres. Therefore, igus is the only provider on the market that can promise a guarantee of 36 months on its cables.
