Mr. J. Vijayakumar, CMD, Anabond Ltd.

Anabond Ltd., headquartered in the Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Industrial Estate at Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai, is one of the leading manufacturers of Engineering Adhesives, Sealants, Paints, Specialty Coatings and other chemical formulations in India. Established in 1979, Anabond has emerged as a name to reckon with in engineering adhesives. An ISO 9001, ISO-14001, and TS-16949 certified company, Anabond is the first to manufacture Anaerobic Adhesives, RTV Silicone Sealants and Single Component Epoxies indigenously. Anabond makes some 300 types of products in its three manufacturing plants. These can be grouped into broad categories like Anaerobic engineering adhesives, RTV silicones, Epoxies (both single component & two components), Polyurethanes, Cyanoacrylates, Acrylic Sealants, Lubricants, Industrial Cleaners and so on. Armed with such a wide array of products, the company serves industries as diverse as automobile, aerospace, process industries, electrical & electronics, construction, FMCG, marine and the like. The company has a market share of 70% in anaerobics and 85% in RTV silicones.

Futuristic Products

Some of its unique products deserve special mention:

Anaerobics:
Anabond’s Anaerobic Adhesives and Sealants are single part acrylic ester-based 100% reactive system which cures in the absence of air and in the presence of metal. Excellent vibration, heat, oil & chemical resistance characterize the cured adhesive. These are high performance compounds possessing very high adhesive strength. Anabond’s Anaerobic formulations provide the viscosity necessary to deliver 100% surface-to-surface contact, whereas mechanical joining techniques provide only 20-30%.

RTV Silicones:
RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) Silicones are one part and two part systems ready to use as adhesives, sealants and potting compounds. These are an unique combination of flexibility and high temperature resistance. When cured, they exhibit outstanding weathering properties possessing excellent resistance to many solvents and having a wide usage. RTV silicones are biologically inert and therefore non-corrosive.

They can be used safely in food processing equipment. They are ideal for applications such as mechanical sealing, electrical insulation, gasket sealing used in engines and power transmission, electrical cable sealing, PCB circuit potting or encapsulation, etc. These are also used in medical applications. For instance, silicones are used for dental filling or impression moldings. They are ideal and economical for these applications. Moreover, the elasticity would last for nearly 50 years!

Cynoacrylates:
Anabond Cyanoacrylates adhesives are one-part acrylate adhesives that cure instantly on contact with a mated surface through a reaction with surface moisture. These adhesives have high strength and excellent adhesion to a wide variety of substrates. Cyanoacrylates are used for bonding anything to anything. These are ideal for making rubber ‘O’ rings in situ. They are colorless and give very good adhesion in less than 5 seconds!

Epoxy:
Anabond’s Epoxies are one part systems which exhibit high hardness and exceptional bond strength on curing. They can bond to a wide range of substrates such as metal, plastic, wood, glass, leather, etc. The cured adhesives have excellent resistance to moisture, oil, solvents and most industrial chemicals.

Polyurethane:
Polyurethane is an incredibly versatile and useful engineering material. Versatility of polyurethane means that it can be formulated in to a very hard solid to a soft elastomer. Anabond polyurethane compounds offer a wide range of viscosity, curing time, pot life, hardness, strength and flexibility and offers unique properties with cost effectiveness.

Polysulphide Sealant:
Anbond Tuffseald Polysulphide sealant is a universally usable concrete joint sealant and industrial insulation glazing sealant. This is a two -part system. After mixing resin and hardener, the polymerization is initiated at room temperature, which proceed further to elastic rubber. The sealant has good adhesion properties and is mainly used as a fuel resistant sealant. Anabond is the largest manufacturer of Polysulphide sealants in India.

Acrylic Sealant:
Anabond 777 is a high quality water based acrylic sealant exhibiting good low temperature flexibility. It is easy to apply and provides a permanently flexible seal between gaps of concrete wall/windows, walls/wash basins, air – condition ducts, etc. This is used widely for construction industries.

Technology & Marketing Tie-ups
Anabond has an on-going tie-up with HS Butyl of UK for manufacture of non-curing rubber profiles in tape, roll or pad forms for use in vacuum bag applications in wind mills, industrial roofing (in overlapping joints), etc. Automobile industry is a major user of these products for control of noise, vibration and harshness. Anabond also manufactures fuel binders for missiles and rockets in a dedicated plant under an agreement with DRDO. ISRO is the ultimate customer. Anabond has a marketing tie-up with Nabakem of Korea. Their aerosol products popularly known as ‘Nabakem’ are well accepted worldwide because of their premium quality and value for money. Nabakem chemicals and aerosols are marketed in India by Anabond.

According to Mr. D.S. Abel, Divisional Manager, Anabond Limited, the first product that a maintenance engineer would recall is Anabond 100 & 400 series Anaerobic Adhesives – Thread Locker and Bearing Retainer. Thread Lockers eliminate conventional locking systems and prevent loosening of nuts even under severe vibration and impact loads. Bearing Retainers eliminate interference fit and transition fit joints and allow uniform load distribution while also eliminating fretting corrosion and seizure. RTV sealants are yet another range of products popular among the maintenance fraternity. Anabond has a whole range of cleaning agents for rust removal from mechanical parts, for cleaning electrical rotating machinery, electronic components, carbon soot, paint, varnish, tar or bitumen compounds, etc. Besides rust preventive lubricants, it also has cold galvanizing sprays (zinc, silver, etc.) in its product portfolio.

Infrastructure
Anabond has three manufacturing plants – two in Chennai and one in Pondicherry. The Pondicherry plant is exclusively for sealants. The company has a workforce of 400 people of which 250 are in the manufacturing plants. Anabond has offices in strategic locations like New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Indore, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Pune, Uttarakhand and Vizag.

In the age of rapid technology growth, developments in adhesives, sealants, encapsulants, paints & specialty coating materials are taking place all over the world to suit diversified challenging applications. In order to cope up with the advancement, Anabond has established an in-house R & D Centre which is approved by the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India. The Centre is staffed by 23 dedicated scientists, 12 chemists and 8 supporting staff working towards developing new products and improving existing products and technologies. Anabond R & D is currently engaged in the developments of composite materials for automobile and machinery components and aerospace applications. It is also working on development of Polyimide with properties such as high insulation resistance, high temperature resistance and high load bearing capacity.
