Q. 50Th Anniversary year of NORD. Good wishes and greetings from Engineering Review Magazine. Please tell us the story of this journey?
Our spirit and enthusiasm was at the same level when we started our Journey 50 yrs. back. Getriebebau NORD started its journey as a supplier of geared motors. The first step towards depth of production and ensuring a high standard of quality, the company inaugurated their own production facility in 1977. Within few years, a small, local gear unit manufacturer developed into a global supplier of mechanical, electronic & electrical drive technology, with its own assembly factories and service facilities on all five continents. Completing 50 yrs. is a milestone & our vision is to become world’s no.1 brand in drive technology in coming yrs.
Q. What is your opinion and views on Central Government policies towards Industries? How it differ from Industrial policies of Germany? Where you see growth of Industries in India coming 5 Years?
Present government policies are talking positive towards Industries, but the basic realities has not changed. Only time will answer this. In Germany, policies are unambiguous & transparent for example taxation, audits, and transfer policies etc. never take long time as in India. I am very confident to see positive development in next 5 years.
Q. What are suggestions and advise to Government of India and State Governments Industrial growth and growth oriented industrial policies in the Country? Which are the points, clauses of industrial policies may get adopted in Indian Industrial policies?
GST is crucial and ease of doing business needs better scoring. Also, the money lying with the government like SAD, Tax Dues, Deposits etc could be released partially with a condition to invest the same in a short span.
This will work in below two ways for the industrial developments:
- Government willingness to ease business
- Helps in removing the liquidity crunch
Q. A total of Rs 98,000 crore has been approved by the Cabinet for development of 100 smart cities and rejuvenation of 500 others. How important will be a role of Power & Automation Sector in building Smart Cities?
I believe, Power and Automation will not play significant role in comparison to the construction, IT or non-conventional energy etc. Still there will be a great scope for Power & Automation Sector too.
Q. Which are your ranges of products manufactured in Maharashtra? What are the utility, importance& significance of your products for the development of Power and infrastructure Sector? How are your products Energy Efficient!
NORD produces various ranges of drive technology including mechanical, electrical & electronic drives – together can also be called as mechatronics. Our products are designed for energy efficient. To put it simple, various parts of drives starting from case (UNICASE) till oil seal (smallest component in the system) are meticulously designed to have the highest efficiency. Since our first introduction of high-efficiency motors in 1997, we have continuously extended and improved our range of motors. Today, we can offer high-quality asynchronous and synchronous motors that meet all crucial standards across the world. Heavily export-oriented partners will find that particularly useful – we can provide solutions that are globally suitable, they do not have to adapt drives for each national market. Moreover, with NORD drives, the physical dimensions will often remain more or less the same if you switch to a more efficient geared motor, so we ensure that our customers have minimal extra engineering effort. Even for the Super Premium standard (IEC Class 4), which is currently only defined in an IEC draft, NORD systems are already available. We offer Super Premium motors in the 0.55 to 7.5 kW range, which covers the better part of all industrial drive systems. Our inverter-controlled units provide full efficiency over the entire speed range, even under partial load.
Q. Please brief us about new Technology of drive solutions for Industrial applications in a wide range of sectors! Would you please brief us about palletizer application by NORD? Which are the new products likely to arrive in market by NORD?
NORD DRIVESYSTEMS supplies efficient drive units for dynamic speed control and automatic process control in applications that need to be regularly cleaned with high-pressure steam jets. Common applications include conveyors, pumps, mixers, and agitators
The optional nsd tupH surface conversion treatment endows the aluminum smooth-surface motors and gearboxes with corrosion resistance similar to stainless steel drives without the scratch or chipping risks of a paint finish. At the same time, the drives are much lighter and have a better thermal performance than stainless steel units. With these integrated drives, commissioning and operation is very user-friendly, including applications with a large number of drives and spacious facilities. NORD delivers complete systems parameterized for the customer’s needs and including the required communication interfaces.
Palletizing Application from NORD
Decentralized NORD drive units consisting of geared motors and motor-mounted frequency inverters control the complex movement s sequences of the centering unit and the manipulator of the high performance palletizing machines.
Palletizing machines form the basis for efficient production and distribution processes. The high performance palletizing machines from the Dutch engineering company SYMECH can position each product individually. Sacks, boxes or crates are supplied via a conveyor belt, aligned with a centering unit and gently placed in their precise positions with a specially designed manipulator.

Q. What are your plans for expansion in India? Are you planning to have your active participation for “Make In India” initiative of GOI?
Currently we are expanding our Pune premise with about a million euro and also working on additional plant in the form of a satellite plant.
In 2015, we have started assembly of our electronic products- Variable frequency drives as an active participation for “Make in India” initiatives.
Q. What is your advice to young engineers?
Compare yourself with you rather than comparing with others, like what you were 3 months ago and what you are today and what you want to become in next few months. comparison can be done for anything like health, wealth, knowledge, skills etc.
Q. Where you see NORD after 10 Years?
I see NORD to be at no. 1 position in India for sure & of course the same position globally as a total solution provider to improve the overall system efficiency.
