Indian Operations
Tata Steel founded India’s first industrial city, now Jamshedpur, where it established Asia’s first integrated steel plant in 1907. The Jamshedpur Works currently comprises a 6.8 MTPA crude steel production facility (with plans to grow to 10 MTPA in FY13) and a variety of finishing mills. Tata Steel has a significant presence in allied and downstream areas through its Strategic Business Units, namely Tubes Division, Bearings Division, Wire Division, Ferro Alloys & Minerals Division and Tata Growth Shop, which develops and manufactures specialist, high-precision industrial equipment. The Company also possesses and operates captive iron ore, coking coal and chrome ore mines.

Tata Steel has planned to set up three new greenfield steel projects in the states of Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, which will provide an additional capacity of 23 MTPA. Work on the 6 MTPA integrated greenfield steel project at Kalinganagar in Jajpur, Odisha, is already underway. A deep-sea port at Dhamra in Odisha, set up in joint venture with Larsen & Toubro, is already operational.

In 2008, Tata Steel India became the first integrated steel plant in the world, outside Japan, to be awarded the Deming Application Prize 2008 for excellence in Total Quality Management. In 2012, the Company achieved the distinction of becoming the first integrated steel plant in the world to be awarded with the Deming Grand Prize, the highest honor in Quality given by the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE).

Corporate Sustainability – the Tata Steel way
Tata Steel was founded on the philosophy that the community is not just another stakeholder in business, but is, in fact, the very purpose of its existence. The CSR activities of the Company have expanded to over 450 villages in the States of Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

Tata Steel is a valued member of the World Steel Association (worldsteel) and has accepted a set of 11 Sustainability Indicators to measure its economic, environmental and social performance within the steel industry. The Company is also guided by frameworks such as the UN Millennium Development Goals which are advanced through its social initiatives.
