Mitsubishi ElectricMitsubishi Electric Cup (ME Cup) — one of India’s most-awaited national-automation contests– is still a few months away but has already created waves in the country’s technical education circuit. Its second edition which will be held in February 2017 has witnessed an overwhelming response with technical institutions from across India sending in their entries in large numbers. The last date of registrations was September 1. This year, the total number of participating teams touched a whopping 95, of which 35 have been shortlisted for the final competition.

Though proposals were received from institutes across India, the response from colleges in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra was the highest. Proposals were also received from several other states including Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Karnataka, West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana etc. Institutions from a total of 13 states have sent in proposals for the competition. The top 35 shortlisted teams include IIT Kharagpur, College of Engineering – Pune,  AKG Engineering College – Ghaziabad, Nirma University  – Ahmedabad,  VIT Chennai, SRM Delhi, Sri Eshwar College Coimbatore, Manav Rachna University – Faridabad, Vishwakarma Institute of technology – Pune, RMK Chennai along with other institutes from various cities like Coimbatore, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Aurangabad, Nadiad, Vadodara, Bhubaneshwar and more.

The theme for this year’s ME Cup — in tandem with the environment statement of Mitsubishi Electric – has been kept ‘Intelligent manufacturing for a greener tomorrow.’ Some of the topics in line with the theme include Smart City – the better way to lead life, Multi-floor car parking, Smart waste management – e-Sorter, Smart medical waste management, Reusing plastic bottle – in smarter way, Smart ‘Water Audit’ and so on. The 35 colleges, who were selected for the final competition were judged by an expert panel on the basis of an array of factors including innovation, technical complexity, inclusion of IoTs and usage of FA products for preparation of the project model in line with the theme. Other factors like documentation, feasibility, commercialisation etc. were also taken into consideration.

In other words, teams that made it to the final selection were judged on the basis of aspects like proposition and design, quality of work; e&eco-f@ctory concept etc. While the teams are now gearing up for the grand finale, the next plan for the ME Cup squad is to distribute the FA products to the shortlisted teams. The distribution will be done primarily through the five FA centres situated in Pune, Gurgaon, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Bangalore in accordance to the colleges that are nearest to the centres. This will be followed by the assigning of technical mentors from Mitsubishi Electric India to the teams who will provide complete technical guidance throughout the development phase and will also impart appropriate training related to the FA products. The performance and developments of the teams will be evaluated on continuous basis. Mitsubishi Electric India ensured that it left no stone unturned when it came to colleges having a requisite know-how about the event, its preparation procedure and the entire groundwork that goes into the run-up to the Cup. In August, the company had joined hands with various institutions to conduct awareness programmes to inform students as well as faculty about the event and encourage them to participate.
