Headquartered in Mumbai, Tata Power, one of the largest integrated power company in India has the presence in almost all the segments of the power sector including generation (thermal, hydro, solar, wind, geothermal and waste gas), transmission, distribution and trading. The company is one of the largest renewable energy players in India and is developing the country’s first 4,000 MW ultra mega power project at Mundra (Gujarat) based on super-critical technology.

Problem faced:
Under an innovative Demand Side Management (DSM) project, Tata Power has launched a Load Shifting Program. The program requires customers to invest in Thermal Storage Units (TSU).Under this program; the customers can shift the load from peak hours to off peak hours. This becomes convenient for users to save the tariff which is high during peak hours. Under this program, HVAC units are operated in off peak hours typically at night and cold air is stored in these thermal storage units. In addition, Online Remote Energy Monitoring System is a necessity for measurement and verification.
EOS Cloud Server provides detailed data of the time of operation of each TSU. Data from EOS cloud is used by Tata Power Limited to calculate benefit to customers. Thus, other load shifting projects are run by Tata Power on EOS Cloud. Supreme Business Park, an esteemed client for Tata Power are using Thermal Storage Programme.
Energos as the chosen solution provider:
1) Six EM210A Standard Smart Meters are installed in 6 chiller plants.
2) All the meters are daisy chained and are connected to the network through a Network Interface Unit (NIU) for dumping data on real time basis into the application. Hence, Energos EMCS Application acts as a middle layer.
3) Analysis of 5 minute interval energy data from meters gives a clear picture to the client that by using Tata Power’s Thermal Storage system, they could shift their Central AC loads from peak hours to off peak hours, thereby reducing energy costs.
